Experiences & Activities
Activities make the trip memorable — or eat your time and budget. The difference is usually in how well the option fits your pace, group, and what you actually want to get out of the day.
The trade-offs worth understanding
- Guided vs self-guided
Guided tours give you context, skip queues, and handle logistics. Self-guided gives you flexibility and usually costs less — but you do the research. Best guided: history, art, food culture. Best self-guided: walking, cycling, museums with good audio guides.
- Duration and pacing
Half-day tours (3–4 hours) fit into a busy itinerary without sacrificing an entire day. Full-day experiences offer depth but require commitment — only worth it if the experience genuinely warrants it.
- Popular vs local
Famous attractions are well-reviewed, easy to book, and crowded. Local experiences are more authentic, often cheaper, and harder to find without a good recommendation. Both have their place — depends on the trip.
- Group size
Large group tours cost less per person. Small group or private tours cost more but allow you to set the pace, ask questions freely, and skip the mass-market energy. Worth it when personalisation actually matters.
