How to choose accommodation
What matters in accommodation
Where you stay affects your daily experience, but there's no single "best" choice. The right accommodation depends on your priorities and how you'll use it.
Location
Central locations save time getting to attractions but cost more. Properties further out are cheaper but add transport costs and travel time. Consider how much you value convenience against budget.
Property type
Hotels provide daily housekeeping, reception services, and often amenities like gyms or restaurants. Aparthotels give you kitchen facilities and typically more space, useful for longer stays or families. Neither is better—they suit different needs.
Booking flexibility
Non-refundable rates are 10-30% cheaper than flexible rates. Flexible rates let you change or cancel, but you pay for that optionality. If your plans are certain, non-refundable saves money. If plans might change, flexible rates avoid losing your deposit.
Trip style fit
Business travel benefits from fast wifi, work desks, and quiet environments. Family trips need connecting rooms or family suites. City breaks prioritize walkable locations. Match the property to how you'll use it.
Common mistakes
- Optimizing for price alone — A cheaper hotel 45 minutes from attractions may cost more in time and transport than a central one.
- Assuming reviews transfer across trip types — A property that works for business travelers may not work for families, even with high ratings.
- Not checking what's included — Some rates include breakfast or airport transfers. Compare total costs, not just room rates.
- Booking too far in advance without flexibility — Non-refundable rates lock you in. If there's any chance of changes, the flexible rate may be worth it.

Decision pathways
If location convenience is your top priority:
Focus on walkability to your main activities. Budget for higher nightly rates but lower transport costs.
If you're traveling with family or staying 5+ nights:
Consider aparthotels with kitchen facilities. You'll save on eating out and have more space.
If your plans might change:
Pay for flexible cancellation. The premium is worth it if there's real uncertainty.
If budget is tight but location matters:
Look slightly outside the center but on good transport links. Check total travel time, not just distance.
